New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Balendra Shah and Rabi Lamichhane following their electoral success in Nepal and the formation of a new government led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party. During a phone conversation, the Indian Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation between the two nations.
Modi expressed confidence that relations between India and Nepal would grow stronger under the new leadership. He said India looks forward to working closely with the incoming government to promote mutual prosperity, development, and the well being of people in both countries.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister congratulated the leaders for their electoral victories and acknowledged the strong performance of the Rastriya Swatantra Party in the parliamentary elections. He also highlighted India’s readiness to collaborate with the new administration to further deepen the longstanding partnership between the neighbouring countries.
Nepal’s House of Representatives consists of 275 members. Of these, 165 are elected through the direct First Past The Post voting system, while the remaining 110 seats are filled through proportional representation.
Results have already been declared for 161 of the 165 constituencies under the direct voting system, with outcomes for the remaining four seats expected soon.
Under the proportional representation system, the Rastriya Swatantra Party has secured more than four million votes, placing it ahead of several established political parties. Other major parties, including the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), also registered significant vote shares.
With the strong performance in proportional representation, the Rastriya Swatantra Party is projected to secure around 40 additional seats. This could take its total tally to approximately 164 seats in the 275 member House of Representatives, comfortably crossing the 138 seat mark required for a simple majority and paving the way for the formation of a stable government.
