Panaji: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India is nearing complete liberation from Naxal-Maoist violence, marking a major milestone in the country’s internal security efforts. Addressing armed forces personnel onboard INS Vikrant off the Goa coast, he commended the courage and dedication of security forces for significantly reducing the Maoist influence across the country.
Modi said that before 2014, nearly 125 districts were affected by Maoist violence, but the number has now fallen to just 11, with only three still showing notable activity. He noted that more than 100 districts once under extremist control are now celebrating Diwali peacefully and with pride.
“The country is on the verge of liberation from Naxal-Maoist terror,” the Prime Minister said, attributing the achievement to the tireless efforts of India’s security personnel. He highlighted that people in many of these regions are experiencing Diwali celebrations for the first time in decades, symbolising freedom from fear and a return to normal life.
Modi added that areas once dominated by Maoists, where schools, hospitals, and roads were destroyed and development was stifled, are now witnessing rapid transformation. New highways, schools, and hospitals are being built, and businesses are emerging, offering new hope for the future.
He also mentioned that during the ongoing GST Bachat Utsav, record levels of local sales and purchases have been reported from regions previously impacted by Maoist activities an indication of restored stability and economic growth.
The Prime Minister said that the fight against Maoist extremism has been one of the most challenging tasks faced by India’s police forces since Independence. “They have achieved 90 percent success,” he said, adding that the struggle required patience and precision to ensure that no innocent lives were harmed.
Modi saluted the bravery and sacrifice of police personnel who have been injured in action yet continue to serve with unwavering commitment. He said their courage and resilience have made it possible for millions to live in peace and celebrate Diwali with dignity.
