NEW DELHI: India highlighted the human and economic impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia during international discussions on the security of the Strait of Hormuz, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating that India is the only country to have lost mariners in recent attacks on merchant vessels in the region.
Misri represented India at a virtual meeting led by the United Kingdom that brought together representatives from more than sixty countries to discuss reopening and safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes. The discussions focused on the ongoing tensions in West Asia and the need to ensure the free movement of commercial shipping through the vital maritime corridor.
During the meeting, Misri emphasised India’s consistent position that the crisis must be addressed through de escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement among all parties involved. He also highlighted the serious implications of the conflict for global energy supplies and maritime security.
According to India’s Directorate General of Shipping, at least three Indian sailors serving on foreign flagged merchant ships have been killed in attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. The losses underline the risks faced by international seafarers operating in the region amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
The meeting was held amid growing global efforts to stabilise the situation and maintain the flow of energy supplies through the Gulf. The discussions also reflected the importance of upholding the principle of freedom of navigation, which remains crucial for global trade and energy transportation.
India has also been actively engaging with countries in the Middle East, including Iran, to ensure safe and uninterrupted passage for commercial vessels. Diplomatic outreach has already helped several Indian ships navigate the strait safely in recent days.
Officials said India remains in close contact with regional stakeholders and will continue to coordinate with international partners to safeguard maritime routes, protect seafarers and maintain stability in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
