New Delhi: India on Tuesday strongly criticized Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council, calling out the country for human rights abuses and accusing it of attempting to mislead the international community. Speaking during the Open Debate on Women, Peace, and Security, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said Pakistan conducts “systematic genocide” and resorts to “misdirection and hyperbole” to distract the world from its own atrocities.
Harish’s remarks came shortly after a Pakistani official claimed that Kashmiri women have “endured sexual violence for decades.” Responding, the Indian envoy said, “Every year, we are unfortunately fated to listen to the delusional tirade of Pakistan against my country, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian territory they covet. Our pioneering record on Women, Peace, and Security agenda is unblemished and unscathed.”
He added, “A country that bombs its own people, conducts systematic genocide, can only attempt to distract the world with misdirection and hyperbole,” highlighting Pakistan’s history of atrocities, including Operation Searchlight in 1971 and the mass sexual violence against 400,000 women during that campaign. “The world sees through Pakistan’s propaganda,” Harish stated.
India had also criticized Pakistan last week during the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. KS Mohammed Hussain, Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, said it was “deeply ironic that a country with one of the world’s worst human rights records seeks to lecture others.” He added that Pakistan should address the “rampant state-sponsored persecution and systemic discrimination of religious and ethnic minorities” within its own borders instead of making baseless allegations against India.
India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and shall forever remain an integral part of the country”, rejecting Pakistan’s repeated attempts to internationalize the issue.
This latest confrontation underscores the ongoing tensions between the two countries at global forums, with India highlighting Pakistan’s human rights record while defending its own governance and security record.
