New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit Canada for the G7 Summit, Indian intelligence agencies have raised serious security concerns over potential threats from pro-Khalistan extremist groups. The agencies have issued detailed warnings to Canadian authorities, urging them to enhance security around the Prime Minister’s movements and monitor known radical elements closely. According to intelligence assessments, the presence of Khalistani groups in Canada—many of which have gained dominance and renewed activity in recent years—poses a significant risk during Modi’s visit, with planned protests and possible disruptive actions already in motion.
Sources within the Indian government confirmed that Canadian authorities have been requested to expand the security perimeter, monitor suspicious individuals, and stay on high alert throughout the duration of the visit. A video message released by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the leader of the banned terrorist organisation Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), has further heightened tensions. In the video, Pannun is seen directing his followers to mobilise and stage demonstrations during Modi’s presence in Canada.
The Prime Minister’s personal security will be handled by the Special Protection Group (SPG), which has already conducted a comprehensive threat assessment. Modi’s schedule has been kept minimal and tightly regulated, with no additional public interactions planned. All routes and venues are to be thoroughly sanitised to prevent any untoward incident. Indian officials are also wary of the current diplomatic climate, noting that relations between India and Canada have been strained in recent months, especially after pro-Khalistan groups targeted Indian diplomatic missions in Vancouver and Toronto.
Canada’s response to anti-India forces operating within its borders has long been a point of contention. This visit will test Canada’s resolve to address India’s security concerns and act firmly against extremist activities, especially during a high-profile global event like the G7 summit. While Canadian officials have not yet released any official statement regarding the intelligence inputs or the measures in place, the international spotlight now puts pressure on them to act decisively.
PM Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and he is expected to participate in key discussions during the G7 Summit. One of the highlights of the trip will be his first bilateral meeting with Carney, scheduled on the sidelines of the summit in Kananaskis. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs views this meeting as an important opportunity to reset India-Canada relations, focusing on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and resolving ongoing irritants.
Following the G7 engagements, PM Modi is also scheduled to visit Croatia on June 18, where he will meet Croatian President Zoran Milanović and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia and is aimed at opening new avenues for bilateral cooperation in trade, culture, and strategic affairs.
As PM Modi embarks on this diplomatic tour, security agencies remain on high alert. The growing footprint of Khalistani extremism in Canada threatens to overshadow a crucial moment in India’s global engagement. For Canada, this visit could be a turning point—either reinforcing its position as a trustworthy partner or exposing its leniency towards anti-India forces.
