New Delhi: In a bold stance against pressured negotiations, India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has reiterated that the country will not engage in trade discussions at gunpoint. This statement follows the US’s decision to temporarily pause reciprocal tariffs on India, creating a potential window for concluding a bilateral trade agreement. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the urgency and challenges India faces in its trade negotiations with the US, highlighting the intricate dynamics at play.
Goyal stressed that India will not rush into any trade deal that doesn’t align with its national interests. The recent 90-day tariff pause by the US presents an opportunity for both countries to expedite negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. Goyal emphasized that India prioritizes its interests and will not be coerced into negotiations. This approach is consistent across all international trade talks, including those with the US, UK, and EU, as India sets its sights on economic progress by 2047.
In a related context, Jaishankar noted the high-pressure environment of India-US trade negotiations. He highlighted the ambitious nature of US trade policies and their potential impact on global trade dynamics. Both India and the US have distinct perspectives on each other, adding complexity to the negotiations. Jaishankar also underscored the unique nature of current trade discussions, contrasting them with past experiences where India was perceived as slowing down negotiations. Today, India is pushing for a faster pace in talks with major partners like the US, EU, and UK.
India’s position on trade reflects a broader strategic objective—pursuing economic growth and international partnerships without compromising national interests. This stance is pivotal in the ongoing discussions with global economic powers, positioning India as a significant player in international trade.
