New Delhi: India has formally entered the race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad proposed as the venue and the central government committing to bear the entire cost of the event. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) approved the bid during its Special General Meeting (SGM), marking a significant boost to the country’s chances of securing the multi-sport spectacle.
India had earlier filed an Expression of Interest, but must now submit the final bid documents by August 31. The withdrawal of Canada from the contest has further strengthened India’s prospects. A delegation from Commonwealth Sport, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently toured Ahmedabad to inspect facilities and meet Gujarat government officials. A larger inspection team is expected later this month.
The final decision on the 2030 Games host will be made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in late November. India last hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi.
