NEW DELHI: India has officially entered the race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, submitting its formal proposal to the Commonwealth Sport (the Commonwealth Games Federation) on Friday. If successful, the event would return to India after two decades, with Ahmedabad positioned as the host city for the centenary edition of the prestigious multi-sport event.
The bid was jointly presented by representatives of the Commonwealth Games Association of India and the Government of Gujarat. Highlighting India’s cultural ethos, Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the Games would be organised on the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family) and guided by the philosophy of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (the guest is divine), ensuring warmth and inclusivity for athletes and visitors.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha called the bid a reflection of the nation’s sporting aspirations.
“This bid represents the dreams of an entire nation. The Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will not only showcase India’s sporting excellence but also our values of friendship, respect, and inclusivity. As we celebrate the centenary edition, India stands ready to welcome the Commonwealth family with warmth and inspire a new generation through sport,” Usha said.
India previously hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi, an edition that remains etched in the country’s sporting history. Hosting the 2030 Games aligns with India’s long-term vision of becoming a global sporting powerhouse, using mega-events as a springboard to boost participation and accelerate infrastructure development.
If Ahmedabad secures the bid, the Games will mark a historic milestone celebrating 100 years of the Commonwealth Games on Indian soil.
