New Delhi: India is on course to build a nationwide aviation network of more than 400 airports by the year 2047, marking a major push to make air travel affordable and accessible to every citizen. The expansion is part of a broader vision to transform the country into a leading global aviation hub connecting the Global South with the rest of the world.
Speaking at the Wings India 2026 aviation summit, the Prime Minister underlined that air travel in India is no longer a privilege limited to a few. Over the past decade, connectivity has expanded rapidly, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, helping bring aviation closer to everyday citizens. From just 70 airports in 2014, India today has over 160 operational airports, along with more than 100 activated aerodromes. Affordable flying initiatives have further widened access, and the next phase of regional connectivity policies is expected to strengthen this momentum.
The Prime Minister highlighted that India’s aviation ambitions go beyond infrastructure growth. The country is positioning itself as a key aviation gateway between emerging economies and developed markets. With its strategic location along major global air corridors, a strong domestic feeder network and plans to expand long haul fleets, India holds significant competitive advantages in international aviation.
Emphasis was also placed on advanced technologies and sustainability. India already plays a major role in manufacturing and supplying aircraft components and is steadily moving toward domestic production of military, transport and civil aircraft. Looking ahead, innovations such as electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft designed and built in India are expected to redefine urban and regional mobility by sharply reducing travel time.
Environmental responsibility remains a central focus of the aviation roadmap. The government is working to position India as a leading producer and exporter of sustainable aviation fuel, supporting global efforts toward greener skies while creating new economic opportunities at home.
Wings India 2026, held in Hyderabad, serves as a platform to showcase the rapid transformation of the sector. Over the years, India’s civil aviation market has recorded strong growth in passenger traffic, aircraft induction and future orders, placing the country among the world’s most promising aviation markets. Beyond airlines, India is also emerging as a hub for maintenance and repair services, pilot training, aerospace manufacturing, cargo logistics and advanced air mobility, reinforcing its growing stature in global civil aviation.
