NEW DELHI: In a major boost to the offensive and reconnaissance capabilities of the Indian Army, the country is set to receive its first consignment of advanced Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States by July 21, according to reports.
The first batch of three Apache helicopters will enhance the operational strength of the Army Aviation Corps (AAC), especially amid rising strategic concerns along the western border following Operation Sindoor. These state-of-the-art helicopters will be deployed in that region, where troop presence has recently increased.
The delivery marks a significant milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military assets. Sources have indicated that the remaining three Apache helicopters—part of a six-helicopter deal signed between India and the US—are expected to arrive by the end of 2025.
The Indian Army had formally raised its first Apache helicopter squadron on March 15 this year in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. While the original delivery schedule was set for June 2024, supply chain disruptions caused delays, pushing the timeline to December 2024. The latest update now suggests the first consignment will arrive earlier than expected.
Notably, the Indian Air Force (IAF) already operates 22 Apache helicopters under a separate deal signed in 2015, with all units delivered by 2020. These helicopters have proven their mettle in various operations and are fully operational in the IAF fleet.
In a parallel move to strengthen indigenous capabilities, the Indian Army Aviation Corps had also signed a contract for 25 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv Mk III in March 2023. The Ministry of Defence signed two major deals worth ₹8,073.17 crore—25 ALHs for the Army and nine for the Indian Coast Guard—marking a significant push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The Apache AH-64E is one of the world’s most advanced multi-role attack helicopters, equipped with all-weather capabilities, precision strike features, advanced sensors, and night-fighting ability. Its induction into the Indian Army is expected to transform India’s aerial combat capabilities, particularly in high-altitude and forward-deployed environments.
With the arrival of these helicopters, India is set to reinforce its strategic edge in the region, blending cutting-edge American technology with domestic advancements in rotary-wing platforms.
