NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a bold new vision for BRICS as India prepares to assume its chairmanship of the global grouping. Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, PM Modi said that under India’s leadership, BRICS will be redefined as “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”
“Under India’s BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form. It will stand for Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability,” PM Modi said, outlining India’s thematic focus for the year ahead.
The summit witnessed participation from the heads of all member nations, who engaged in wide-ranging discussions on key global issues. Deliberations covered areas such as global governance reforms, enhancing the voice of the Global South, peace and security, multilateralism, development, and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence.
Addressing a session on Global Governance and Peace and Security, Prime Minister Modi issued a strong call for unified global action against terrorism. Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack of April 2025, he said the assault was not just an attack on India but an attack on humanity itself.
“Terrorism remains one of the gravest threats facing humanity. The Pahalgam attack was an assault on our shared values and the global order,” the Prime Minister said.
He urged BRICS member states to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and demanded that countries supporting or harboring terrorists be held accountable without exception.
“There must be no double standards when it comes to tackling terrorism. Those who fund, shelter, or promote terror must face the harshest international action,” he added.
PM Modi also thanked fellow BRICS leaders for condemning the Pahalgam terror attack in strong terms, underlining the importance of a united global stand against such violence.
As India prepares to take over the BRICS presidency, Modi’s message signaled a pivot towards a more inclusive, resilient, and innovation-driven agenda. The new interpretation of BRICS places a strong emphasis on sustainability, cooperation, and adaptability in an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
With BRICS evolving amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, India’s chairmanship is expected to focus on strengthening the bloc’s role in global governance, giving a stronger platform to developing nations, and promoting equitable development across regions.
The 17th BRICS Summit comes at a time when the world faces overlapping challenges—from climate change and global conflict to economic instability and technological disruption. Against this backdrop, PM Modi’s message struck a chord with the summit’s call for unity, equity, and collective resilience.
India’s year at the helm of BRICS will officially begin in 2026, and the world will watch closely as it looks to translate this ambitious vision into concrete outcomes.
