New Delhi: India on Thursday said it would take appropriate action after verifying remarks attributed to former US President Donald Trump on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which have been circulating widely on social media.
Responding to questions at a regular briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs said it had not yet verified the authenticity of the video clip in question. The spokesperson said the government would first examine whether the remarks were genuine or taken out of context. Based on that assessment, India would respond in an appropriate manner.
The clip, reportedly from a media interaction in the United States, shows Trump referring to Modi and saying he did not want to “destroy” the Indian leader’s political career. The comments have sparked debate online, with questions being raised over their timing, intent, and possible diplomatic implications.
The external affairs ministry said it had taken note of the circulating content but stressed that conclusions could not be drawn until the video was properly examined. Officials indicated that both the authenticity of the clip and the broader context in which the remarks were made would be central to determining India’s response.
The spokesperson also addressed queries on recent changes to a US government factsheet linked to the interim trade framework between India and the United States. He said both countries continue to engage on implementing the understanding reached earlier this month and that revisions in language do not alter the substance of the agreement.
India and the US share a strategic partnership, and officials said matters with the potential to affect bilateral ties are handled with care. The government reiterated its commitment to managing the relationship through established diplomatic channels.
