New Delhi: Amid growing tensions in West Asia, India on Tuesday welcomed reports of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, expressing cautious optimism and reiterating its long-held stance that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths to peace.
The statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) came just hours after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire following a series of escalating military exchanges — including US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iranian retaliation targeting US military bases in Qatar.
“We have been following the developments overnight with deep concern, especially regarding the conflict between Iran and Israel,” the MEA said. “While we remain deeply concerned about the overall regional stability, we welcome the ceasefire and appreciate the efforts of the US and Qatar in facilitating it.”
India reiterated its call for peaceful conflict resolution, stating unequivocally, “There is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy.”
The MEA added, “India stands ready to play its part in any efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region and urges all parties involved to work towards sustained calm.”
As one of the region’s long-time partners with strategic ties to both the Middle East and the West, India has consistently advocated for restraint and has often offered to facilitate constructive engagement during regional crises.
The ceasefire comes as a relief amid fears of a broader conflict, with the international community closely watching developments in the region.
