New Delhi: In the wake of recent developments in Indian boxing, Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh has emphasized the need for increased international exposure to bolster the country’s medal prospects at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This call comes as India continues to navigate administrative challenges within its boxing federation. The country’s progress in sports has been notable, but Vijender believes that competing on the global stage is crucial for success.
Vijender’s advocacy for more foreign exposure is timely, given the recent participation of Indian youth boxers in the U19 World Boxing Championships in the USA. Notable boxers like Lovlina Borgohain have also been active, competing in the National Games in Uttarakhand. However, Vijender stresses that consistent international competition is essential for Indian boxers to gain the experience needed to compete effectively at the Olympics.
To support this vision, Vijender has also called for fresh and fair elections within the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), which has faced administrative instability. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) recently formed an ad hoc committee to manage the BFI’s affairs, including senior boxer Shiva Thapa. This committee aims to address grievances, facilitate athlete participation in international competitions, and expedite the conduct of BFI elections.
