New Delhi:
India’s cricket team is grappling with a major setback as their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, has been sidelined due to a back injury, casting a shadow over their upcoming home series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy. Bumrah, who recently led India as the stand-in captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, suffered back spasms that prevented him from bowling in the final innings of the series.
Impact on Upcoming Series and Champions Trophy
Bumrah’s injury is a significant blow, especially given his outstanding performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he took 32 wickets despite India’s 1-3 loss to Australia. His absence is crucial, as he was the standout player in the series and his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy, starting on February 19, is now under scrutiny.
Details of the Injury and Rehabilitation
Bumrah’s back spasms are attributed to his excessive workload during the series, where he bowled over 150 overs. The BCCI medical team is currently assessing the severity of his injury, which has not yet been graded. Depending on the grade of the injury, Bumrah’s recovery could range from two to three weeks for a Grade 1 injury, six weeks for a Grade 2 injury, or up to three months for a Grade 3 injury.
Implications for England Series and Champions Trophy Preparation
India is set to face England in five T20Is and three ODIs starting January 22. Initially, Bumrah was expected to play in at least two ODIs as part of the preparation for the 50-over format of the Champions Trophy. However, his current injury status may prevent him from participating in the majority of the series. His fitness will be closely monitored, and there is a possibility he might play the last match of the England series at his home ground in Ahmedabad on February 12 to assess his readiness.
Champions Trophy Campaign
India’s Champions Trophy campaign begins against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. Bumrah’s presence is pivotal for India’s success in the tournament, and his availability will be a key factor in the team’s strategy. The BCCI is focusing on ensuring Bumrah’s readiness for this critical event, highlighting the importance of his role in the team’s fortunes.
