New Delhi: In a significant milestone for India’s defence sector, exports have reached an unprecedented high of Rs 23,622 crore in the financial year 2024-25, marking a substantial 12.04% increase from the previous year. This achievement has been hailed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a crucial step towards self-reliance and global leadership in defence manufacturing. As India positions itself as a major player in the global defence market, its evolving defence capabilities are increasingly recognized worldwide.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced this record figure on Tuesday, highlighting India’s strategic progress. In the previous fiscal year, defence exports had stood at Rs 21,083 crore, reflecting the rapid growth the sector is experiencing. The Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) have played a pivotal role in this, with a remarkable 42.85% surge in their exports during 2024-25. This growth underscores the expanding global acceptance of Indian defence products and their integration into the global supply chain.
The private sector and DPSUs collectively contributed Rs 15,233 crore and Rs 8,389 crore, respectively, to the defence exports in 2024-25. This compares to Rs 15,209 crore and Rs 5,874 crore in the previous year, demonstrating the substantial increase in DPSU contributions. The scope of exports is vast, with a wide range of defence items, including ammunition, arms, sub-systems, and critical components, being shipped to around 80 countries.
Furthermore, the Department of Defence Production issued 1,762 export authorisations in 2024-25, up from 1,507 in the preceding year, marking a 16.92% increase. Concurrently, the total number of exporters saw a 17.4% growth during the same period, indicating a more inclusive and robust defence export industry. With these developments, India is firmly on track to achieve its ambitious target of Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, solidifying its position as a key player in the global defence market.
