New Delhi: As the ongoing conflict involving Iran enters its sixth week, officials from Tehran have expressed hope that India could play a larger role in mediating efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
Dr. Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, called for renewed global efforts toward peace and highlighted the strength of India’s diplomatic approach. Speaking about the situation, he described the conflict as a serious mistake that has affected not only Iran but people across many countries.
Ilahi emphasised that India’s diplomatic influence and balanced international relations place it in a strong position to contribute to peace negotiations. According to him, the consequences of the war are being felt worldwide, with civilians in several regions facing hardship as the conflict continues.
Similar sentiments were earlier expressed by Iran’s ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, who said New Delhi could play an effective and constructive role in easing tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel. He pointed to India’s long standing ties with all sides and its reputation for maintaining a balanced foreign policy.
The diplomatic discussion follows a recent announcement by Donald Trump about a temporary pause in escalation and the proposal of a 15 point ceasefire plan sent to Tehran through intermediaries in Pakistan. Pakistan has also offered to host potential talks, although the broader geopolitical environment remains complex.
Meanwhile, maritime activity in the region continues despite heightened tensions. Several Indian vessels have successfully navigated the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
An India flagged LPG tanker named Green Asha recently crossed the strait safely, becoming the ninth Indian vessel to pass through the route since the conflict began. Other ships transporting liquefied petroleum gas and crude oil have also completed similar journeys, delivering cargo to ports including Mundra Port and Kandla Port in Gujarat.
Despite disruptions in regional shipping lanes, these voyages highlight the continued movement of essential energy supplies as diplomatic efforts seek to stabilise the situation.
