New Delhi: The central government has assured that India’s fuel and cooking gas supplies remain secure for the coming months and urged citizens not to panic buy amid rumours circulating online.
In a statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG anywhere in the country. Authorities called on the public to rely on verified information and avoid being influenced by misleading messages on social media that have created unnecessary panic.
The ministry emphasised that all fuel retail outlets are adequately stocked and capable of meeting consumer demand. It also stated that India continues to maintain strong energy reserves despite ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global oil markets.
Officials highlighted that India is the world’s fourth largest oil refiner and the fifth largest exporter of petroleum products, supplying refined fuel to more than 150 countries. According to the government, the country currently holds around 74 days of total reserve capacity and approximately 60 days of actual stock cover, including crude oil reserves, refined product stocks and strategic petroleum storage.
The statement added that even though shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has faced disruptions due to the conflict in the region, India has diversified its supply sources. Crude oil is now being received from more than 41 international suppliers, ensuring stable inflow of energy resources.
Authorities also addressed concerns regarding cooking gas availability. The government said domestic refinery production of Liquefied Petroleum Gas has been increased by about 40 percent, raising daily output to roughly 50 thousand metric tonnes against a national requirement of about 80 thousand metric tonnes.
Oil companies are currently delivering over 50 lakh LPG cylinders each day. Demand had briefly surged to around 89 lakh cylinders daily due to panic ordering, but has since returned to normal levels.
The ministry reiterated that India has already secured crude oil procurement for the next two months and continues to finalise additional purchases. Officials stressed that the country’s energy supply situation remains stable and capable of meeting domestic demand for an extended period despite uncertainties in global markets.
