New Delhi: As the devastating effects of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake continue to unfold in Myanmar, India has swiftly launched Operation Brahma—a comprehensive humanitarian mission designed to provide critical relief to the earthquake-stricken nation. This operation underscores India’s role as a rapid responder to such crises, with Indian Navy ships already en route to Yangon, carrying essential supplies to support the relief efforts.
In Mandalay, a team of 10 Relief and Rescue personnel from India touched down at Mandalay International Airport, marking the beginning of India’s on-ground operations. This team is pivotal in conducting site reconnaissance, preparing for the establishment of a vital Field Hospital to bolster the local healthcare infrastructure. The full contingent, accompanied by heavy equipment and additional supplies, is set to follow shortly, ensuring a robust response to the medical needs of those affected by the disaster.
Indian Navy ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri from the Eastern Naval Command have set sail for Yangon, carrying essential relief materials, including food, water, clothing, and emergency medical supplies. This naval deployment is part of a broader strategy to deliver approximately 52 tonnes of relief aid, reinforcing India’s commitment to being a first responder in regional humanitarian crises. Additional ships, INS Karmuk and LCU 52, are departing from the Andaman and Nicobar Command to further bolster these efforts.
The earthquake, the largest in Myanmar’s recent history, has had a profound impact on the country, resulting in at least 1,700 confirmed fatalities and over 3,400 injuries. The sheer scale of the devastation is expected to continue unfolding, with fears that the final death toll could surpass 10,000 people, as estimated by the United States Geological Survey.
