SERAULIM: Reports of a banned bullfight allegedly held in Seraulim village on Sunday evening have once again put the spotlight on enforcement agencies, after a spectator reportedly sustained injuries during the event.
Colva police officials said they are in the process of verifying the information and assured that appropriate legal action will be initiated once the facts are established. Sources indicated that the incident occurred when one of the bulls attempted to break away from the arena instead of engaging with its rival. During the commotion, a bullfight enthusiast was reportedly injured and later shifted to a hospital for treatment.
When contacted by the media, police personnel on duty at the Colva police station stated that no formal complaint had been registered so far. However, they confirmed that inquiries are underway to ascertain the details surrounding the alleged event.
The issue has revived memories of a fatal incident last year, when a resident of Chandor-Guirdolim lost his life after being gored by a bull during a similar event held within the Colva police station limits.
Notably, just a month ago, South Goa Additional Collector-II Ramesh Gaonkar had issued a memorandum directing strict adherence to High Court orders banning bullfights in the State. The communication specifically instructed the Colva Police Inspector to ensure a thorough probe into an earlier case linked to a bullfight reported from Seraulim.
The memorandum also called for the identification of organisers, landowners and participants involved in conducting such prohibited events. In addition, the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate-II were asked to closely monitor and, if necessary, enforce prohibitory orders to prevent the recurrence of bullfights and related incidents.
