COLVALE:Police have arrested an undertrial prisoner in connection with a plot to smuggle cannabis into the high-security Colvale Central Jail, marking a major step forward in the ongoing investigation.
The suspect, Manthan Chari, is already incarcerated for his alleged involvement in a 2024 murder in Mapusa. According to investigators, the seized consignment of ganja—hurled over the jail’s boundary wall last week—was meant for Chari’s use inside the prison.
Following his arrest on Friday, Chari was produced before a Mapusa court, which ordered four days of police custody to facilitate further inquiries.
This latest arrest follows an earlier operation on Wednesday, when Colvale Police nabbed three individuals and took a minor into custody for attempting to smuggle the contraband into the prison.
The accused reportedly used a rope tied to a nearby tree to fling small, tightly wrapped packets of cannabis over the wall in a cinematic fashion.
Sources suggest the smuggling network may extend beyond those already apprehended, with police indicating that additional arrests are likely as the investigation continues.
