PANAJI: FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez has rejected suggestions that his side may lack motivation in the ongoing Indian Super League season after already securing a spot in next year’s AFC Champions League Two playoffs.
Goa booked their continental berth by lifting the Super Cup, defeating East Bengal on penalties at home. With the ISL season shortened to 13 matches per team, even the league winners will now have to go through playoffs to reach Asia’s second tier club competition.
Addressing the media ahead of their next fixture, Marquez insisted that his team remains fully committed. He said that regardless of squad composition, FC Goa will stay competitive throughout the campaign. Reflecting on their 1 1 draw against Inter Kashi in the opener, he admitted the team struggled in the first half but felt the result was fair. Goa salvaged a point through a late penalty by Dejan Drazic after a disjointed start.
Marquez noted that Inter Kashi’s defensive organisation made them difficult opponents, especially after taking the lead. He emphasised that breaking down teams with disciplined defensive structures requires sharp attacking play.
Goa next face Mohammedan Sporting Club, who are currently fielding an all Indian lineup due to a transfer ban. Despite their narrow loss to Jamshedpur FC in the opener, Marquez believes Mohammedan pose a serious challenge, particularly as they can play without pressure.
He underlined that every ISL opponent brings a distinct style, citing upcoming fixtures against SC Delhi and East Bengal as further tests. Marquez expressed confidence that his players understand these challenges and will continue to compete strongly in every match.
