New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is optimistic about recovering its Olympic Solidarity grant worth around ₹15 crore that was frozen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year amid internal infighting.
The grant, meant for athlete development programmes, was withheld in October 2024 after the IOC’s Executive Board took note of a bitter rift within the IOA, including a contentious September 26 meeting in which 12 Executive Council members opposed the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as CEO.
With a truce reached on July 24 between IOA President P.T. Usha and the rebel EC members, the association conducted a smooth Special General Body Meeting (SGM) and Executive Council meeting on Wednesday. Usha expressed confidence that the IOC would now lift the freeze.
“The IOC will be happy that we are working together. We will submit our report and the money will be released. This is not a small amount it’s ₹15 crore,” Usha told PTI on the sidelines of the SGM, which also approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Olympic Solidarity provides financial support to National Olympic Committees, funded by a share of Olympic broadcast revenues, and is primarily used for scholarships, training, and qualification programmes for athletes.
2030 CWG Bid to be AI-Driven
If awarded the 2030 Commonwealth Games, IOA officials say India’s edition will be technology-focused, with extensive use of Artificial Intelligence, sustainability initiatives, and a strong legacy plan for the host city.
“The Games will be tech-driven, with AI playing a big role. Sustainability and long-term benefits for the host will be a priority,” said CEO Raghuram Iyer.
2036 Olympics Ambitions Continue Despite IOC ‘Pause’
Even as new IOC President Kirsty Coventry has paused the global Olympic host selection process to reassess procedures, Iyer confirmed that India remains in constant dialogue with the body regarding its Expression of Interest to host the 2036 Olympics.
“We are in continuous contact with the IOC. They are re-evaluating the process with a focus on sustainability, diversity, and equal opportunities. The contours of India’s 2036 Olympics Bid Committee will be finalised soon,” Iyer added.
With internal disputes settled and an ambitious roadmap for global events, the IOA is aiming to restore its credibility and secure both the much-needed grant and major international hosting rights.
