Tehran: As the conflict between Iran and Israel intensifies, Iran has responded positively to India’s urgent appeal for the safe evacuation of Indian nationals stranded in various Iranian cities. With Iranian airspace currently shut due to heavy aerial bombardments, Tehran has announced that all land borders remain open, offering a critical alternative route for those seeking to exit the country.
In an official statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that, despite the closure of airports, land routes are accessible for evacuation. It extended full cooperation to India, assuring assistance in safely transporting not just diplomats but also civilians. Tehran has asked the Indian authorities to provide detailed information such as names, passport numbers, vehicle specifications, intended border points, and travel times to make necessary arrangements and ensure a secure evacuation process.
The situation remains dire for thousands of Indians, including more than 1,500 students, many of them from Jammu and Kashmir, who are currently stuck in cities across Iran. As missiles continue to be exchanged between Iran and Israel, the Indian government is under growing pressure to evacuate its citizens. On Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is actively monitoring the security situation and facilitating the relocation of students to safer locations within the country. The government also assured that “other feasible options” for evacuation are being explored as a matter of priority.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued an advisory asking Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to stay calm, remain indoors, and avoid any unnecessary movement. The embassy has provided a Google Form via its official social media accounts, requesting citizens to submit their personal details to help with coordination efforts. In addition, a dedicated Telegram channel has been launched for those currently in Iran, enabling direct communication and real-time updates on the evolving situation. The embassy stressed the importance of not panicking and maintaining close contact with official channels.
This diplomatic action follows a major military escalation that began on Friday, when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion” — a surprise offensive that reportedly targeted Iran’s top military leadership and damaged nuclear infrastructure. In retaliation, Iran fired back with a series of airstrikes. Over the last four days, both nations have exchanged hundreds of missiles, showing no signs of de-escalation. Israel has indicated that the offensive will continue, while Iran has vowed to retaliate fiercely, warning that it will “open the gates of hell.”
The rapid escalation has prompted concern from the international community, with calls for restraint growing louder. However, as the crisis deepens, the safety of foreign nationals, including Indians, has become a pressing concern. India’s diplomatic mission is working round-the-clock to coordinate with Iranian officials and other international partners to initiate safe and timely evacuations. Officials are also preparing for the possibility of overland travel through neighboring countries should air routes remain inaccessible.
In the meantime, Indian nationals in Iran are urged to remain alert, follow all local advisories, and stay connected with the Indian Embassy for instructions. While the situation on the ground remains volatile, Iran’s willingness to keep land borders open provides a lifeline for many stranded individuals. The coming days will be critical, as Indian authorities move swiftly to ensure the safe return of their citizens amidst one of the region’s most dangerous flare-ups in recent years.
