Panaji: In a major breakthrough, North Goa Police have apprehended two members of the notorious Irani gang in connection with a series of gold chain snatching incidents reported across the state.
The arrested individuals, Abbas Zaidi and Sharif Shah — both hailing from Maharashtra — were caught during a focused operation by law enforcement. Police have linked the duo to at least four separate cases of chain snatching in different locations in Goa.
The arrests are part of an intensified crackdown on interstate criminal gangs suspected of operating in the region. Investigators have launched a wider probe to trace other gang members and recover stolen jewellery.
“We have gathered substantial evidence connecting the accused to multiple thefts. Our teams are working to identify more victims and retrieve the stolen gold,” a senior police official said.
The Irani gang is infamous for engaging in street-level theft and fraud across several states. The latest arrests are expected to provide crucial leads into the gang’s activities in Goa.
