NEW DELHI: A tanker carrying Iranian crude oil that was earlier expected to arrive in India has changed its course and is now heading toward China, reflecting the complicated geopolitical environment surrounding global oil trade amid ongoing regional tensions.
The vessel, identified as Ping Shun, is an Aframax class tanker built in 2002. Ship tracking data indicates that the tanker is now signaling Dongying in China as its destination. Earlier in the week, the vessel had indicated an arrival at Vadinar Terminal on India’s western coast, with an expected arrival date of April 4.
However, recent tracking information shows that the tanker has veered sharply south, suggesting a change in route. Analysts note that shipping data transmitted through transponders and automatic identification systems can change frequently, meaning the vessel’s final destination could still be revised.
The Eswatini flagged tanker had originally signaled that it was en route to Vadinar after loading crude oil from Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub. Officials familiar with the situation indicated earlier that the shipment was intended for India, subject to the completion of all legal documentation required under international maritime regulations.
Shipping experts say several factors may have contributed to the sudden diversion. These could include pricing issues, insurance complications, operational considerations involving the crew, or documentation requirements related to sanctioned oil cargo.
The tanker is operated by Nycity Shipmanagement Co Ltd, a Chinese shipping company. The vessel had previously indicated Chinese ports as possible destinations before briefly signaling India.
India remains highly dependent on energy imports, sourcing nearly 90 percent of its crude oil from overseas markets. A large portion of these supplies passes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, where recent tensions and disruptions have raised concerns about the stability of global oil flows.
