New Delhi: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat has voiced support for implementing the Uniform Civil Code across India, suggesting it should follow the framework adopted by Uttarakhand. He described the move as beneficial for the nation and conducive to greater social cohesion.
Speaking at a former servicemen’s dialogue in Dehradun to mark the centenary year of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Bhagwat said the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code would be a positive development for the country. He added that if implemented nationwide, it should mirror the approach taken by Uttarakhand, which became the first state to enforce the law on January 27 last year.
Bhagwat noted that in Uttarakhand, the draft proposal was placed in the public domain before finalisation. According to him, nearly three lakh suggestions were received from citizens, and many of these inputs were incorporated into the final legislation. He said such a consultative process strengthened the law and reflected broad public participation.
Declining to comment on matters related to the University Grants Commission, Bhagwat stated that the issue is currently under consideration before the Supreme Court of India.
Addressing retired members of the armed forces and paramilitary services at the event, he underlined the continued importance of defence forces in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty. While India is independent, he said, maintaining strong security institutions remains essential to protect that independence.
Bhagwat also reflected on the growth of the Sangh over the decades, saying it was built without external resources and continued to advance despite facing restrictions in the past. He encouraged former servicemen to participate in Sangh activities and service initiatives according to their interests and capabilities.
