New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a detailed telephonic conversation with Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, to discuss the escalating situation in West Asia and its impact on global energy security and the international economy.
The discussion focused on the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which has unsettled global markets and triggered concerns about disruptions to vital energy supplies. Both sides also reviewed the broader economic implications of the crisis and agreed to remain in close contact as the situation develops.
The conversation came shortly after Jaishankar spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding recent developments in the conflict. During that interaction, he conveyed greetings on the occasions of Nowruz and Eid and discussed the evolving situation in the region and its potential impact on neighbouring countries.
India has consistently emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy since the beginning of the conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly underlined that peaceful engagement remains the only viable path to reduce tensions and address the underlying issues driving the crisis.
Since the war began on February 28, Jaishankar has maintained communication with leaders from both Israel and Iran while urging restraint and de escalation through diplomatic engagement. India has also highlighted the need to protect international shipping routes and maintain uninterrupted global supply chains, which are critical for energy imports and trade.
The ongoing tensions have also influenced global oil markets. Prices slipped after US President Donald Trump extended a deadline for Iran to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Trump also said that discussions were underway to resolve the conflict, though Iranian authorities have rejected claims of negotiations and dismissed them as misinformation.
