New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough for justice, India has secured the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has hailed this move as a crucial step towards providing justice for the victims and their families. This development marks a milestone in the long-standing collaboration between India and the United States to combat terrorism.
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistan-born Canadian national, was extradited from the United States to India under the India-US Extradition Treaty. Rana had been in judicial custody in the US before exhausting all his legal options against extradition. His extradition is the culmination of sustained efforts by Indian intelligence agencies working closely with US authorities to bring him to justice.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged India’s relentless pursuit of justice for the 166 victims of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, including six Americans. Rubio emphasized the collaborative efforts between the two nations to ensure those responsible are held accountable. The US Department of Justice highlighted that Rana faces numerous charges in India related to his role in planning the attacks.
US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed Rana’s extradition to India, noting that the US has long supported India’s efforts to bring culprits to justice. The 2008 Mumbai attacks remain among the most horrific and catastrophic events in India’s history, underscoring the significance of this extradition in the quest for justice.
