New Delhi – The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed Delhi Police to enhance the security cover of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s Operation Sindoor.
According to official sources, a special bulletproof vehicle has been added to Dr. Jaishankar’s convoy, and security around his residence has been tightened. Delhi Police have initiated comprehensive upgrades to his security detail, acting on the MHA’s instructions.
Dr. Jaishankar already enjoys Z-category security, one of the highest levels of protection in India, with 33 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos providing round-the-clock coverage. This includes armed guards at his residence, multiple personal security officers, surveillance teams, and trained drivers on 24/7 rotation.
The security review also includes Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other senior BJP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and various Union Ministers. The decision was taken during a high-level security meeting chaired by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on Sunday.
The move follows increased threats amid the recent military faceoff between India and Pakistan. Tensions peaked after India conducted precision strikes under Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This was in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people.
In response, Pakistan launched drone and missile attacks targeting Indian civilian and military infrastructure. However, tensions de-escalated after an “understanding” was reached on May 10, following a hotline call initiated by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to his Indian counterpart.
Notably, this is not the first time Dr. Jaishankar’s security has been upgraded. In October 2023, his protection level was increased from Y to Z category after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) flagged potential threats. At that time, his security setup included 12 armed guards, six personal security officers, 12 NSG commandos on rotational shifts, surveillance teams, and specially trained drivers.
As diplomatic and military tensions continue to fluctuate, security agencies are staying alert and ensuring the protection of high-profile individuals involved in sensitive national affairs.
