NEW DELHI: Japan has announced that its next-generation E10 series Shinkansen trains will be introduced on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor by the early 2030s, giving a major push to India–Japan strategic and economic cooperation. The decision was unveiled during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Japan, following his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Calling the project a “landmark in India–Japan relations,” both leaders underscored the importance of fast-tracking the bullet train’s operations. Alongside the E10 introduction, India will also receive a General Inspection Train (GIT) and a set of E5 Shinkansen rolling stock to support immediate implementation of the advanced Japanese signalling system. PM Modi said on X that the roadmap for future cooperation would prioritise investment, innovation, technology, environment, mobility, healthcare, and stronger state-prefecture partnerships.
The Government of India welcomed Japan’s move, calling it a transformative step in modernising India’s rail infrastructure and a shining example of bilateral collaboration. “This project is not just about speed but about strengthening trust and connectivity between our nations,” officials stated.
Meanwhile, Japan has also set an ambitious investment target of 10 trillion yen (approximately $67 billion) of private capital into India. Announcing the figure, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the target reflected “the tremendous confidence of Japanese businesses in India’s growth story.” At the India–Japan Business Forum, nearly 150 MoUs and partnerships worth over $13 billion were signed across diverse sectors.
The E10 Shinkansen, Japan’s newest addition to its famed bullet train family, represents cutting-edge rail technology, built for higher speeds, greater efficiency, and enhanced passenger safety. Its planned deployment in India by the early 2030s will mark the most advanced Japanese rail export to India yet—cementing the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed corridor as a global symbol of innovation and cooperation.
