New Delhi:
As the cricket world gears up for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is facing a critical period of uncertainty regarding his participation. Bumrah, who was instrumental in India’s performance during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, suffered from back spasms during the final Test match in Sydney. This injury forced him to stop bowling in the second innings, prompting immediate medical attention and scans.
Bumrah has sought the expertise of New Zealand-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten, who has previously treated him for a back issue in 2023. Dr. Schouten is currently in touch with the BCCI’s medical team, and the selectors are awaiting his assessment to make an informed decision about Bumrah’s inclusion in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy.
The deadline for announcing the squad is January 12, and while Bumrah is likely to be named, his participation will be contingent on him being “pain-free after returning to bowling.” This condition underscores the cautious approach the team is taking to ensure Bumrah’s fitness and longevity.
Former India trainer Ramji Srinivasan highlighted the complexity of Bumrah’s injury, noting that if it is merely a back spasm, he could recover quickly. However, if it is a stress fracture, the recovery period could range from one to six months. Srinivasan emphasized the need for careful handling of Bumrah, given his crucial role in the team and the upcoming IPL season.
In addition to his fitness concerns, Bumrah’s name has also been floated as a potential successor to Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain. However, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed reservations about this possibility, arguing that the added leadership responsibilities could overburden Bumrah and impact his fitness and career. Kaif suggested that a batter like KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant would be a more suitable choice for the captaincy role.
As India prepares to host England for a series of T20Is and ODIs before the Champions Trophy, Bumrah’s availability remains a significant talking point. His recovery process will be closely monitored, and any decision regarding his participation will be made with his long-term fitness in mind.
