Margao: A shocking assault on a jeweller in broad daylight at Borda has triggered concern among residents, after an unidentified man attacked the shop owner with a hammer and fled the scene without managing to steal any valuables.
The incident occurred around 6:30 pm on Tuesday, when the victim, Sohan Raikar, was alone at his jewellery outlet along the busy Borda road. According to police, the assailant arrived at the shop claiming he wanted to sell gold ornaments on behalf of his mother. However, moments later, he allegedly pulled out a hammer from his bag and launched a violent attack on Raikar.
The jeweller sustained bleeding injuries during the altercation and was immediately rushed to the South Goa District Hospital for treatment. Despite the sudden assault and chaos, police confirmed that the attacker failed to take any ornaments or cash from the store before fleeing.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker had covered his face and head with a mask, making identification difficult. The Fatorda Police, under the supervision of PI Nathan Almeida, have registered a case of assault and launched a full-fledged investigation. DySP Sidhant Shirodkar, who is overseeing the probe, stated that fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were deployed to assist in collecting evidence from the crime scene.
“Initial findings suggest that no items were stolen during the attack. We are actively investigating the motive behind the assault and are pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the accused,” said DySP Shirodkar.
