Canacona: In a major burglary, thieves broke into an unoccupied house at Shingale-Ponsulem in Canacona and made away with gold jewellery valued at over ₹15 lakh.
Complainant Mikhila Fernandes, who along with her siblings resides in Margao and occasionally visits their Ponsulem home, told police that the theft came to light on Sunday morning after a neighbour noticed the gate and main door locks broken and alerted her.
On reaching the house, Fernandes found the premises ransacked, furniture and cupboards damaged, and the locks on her room and closet forced open. Several items of gold jewellery were reported missing.
The Canacona police, who registered the case, requisitioned a dog squad to the site and examined CCTV footage from the neighbourhood. Investigators suspect the burglary occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Further investigation is underway.
