New Delhi: In a bold move, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has challenged the deeply ingrained caste-based politics in India, emphasizing that an individual’s worth should be measured by their qualities, not their caste or identity. This stance, voiced during a convocation ceremony at the Central India Group of Institutions in Nagpur, highlights Gadkari’s commitment to meritocracy and education as the pillars of societal progress.
Gadkari’s remarks are significant not only because they challenge a long-standing aspect of Indian political culture but also because they underscore his unwavering commitment to principles over political expediency. Addressing a gathering of students, he reiterated his famous statement, “Jo karega jaat ki baat, usko kass ke marunga laat,” meaning, “I will kick hard anyone who talks about caste,” to emphasize his opposition to discussing caste in politics.
During the ceremony, Gadkari encouraged students to become job creators rather than job seekers, emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation. He cited Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as an exemplary figure whose achievements transcended caste and religion, demonstrating how education can empower individuals and bring progress to the nation. Gadkari also shared his personal story, clarifying why he doesn’t use the ‘Dr’ title despite holding multiple honorary degrees, and stressed that knowledge combined with entrepreneurship is crucial for success.
Gadkari’s stance against caste politics is not without potential risks; he acknowledged that his friends have cautioned him about the electoral consequences. However, he remains resolute, stating, “Does anyone die if he loses an election? I will stick to my principles.” This commitment to his beliefs, even in the face of political adversity, underscores his vision for a more inclusive and meritocratic society.
