Kolkata: The junior doctors protesting against the Kolkata rape and murder case have remained firm in their demand for the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. The arrest of former RG Kar Principal Sandeep Ghosh by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday is seen as a moral victory for the protesters.
On Monday night, junior resident doctors staged a sit-in at Kolkata’s BB Ganguly Street near Lalbazar. The police had earlier barricaded the procession of junior doctors near Lalbazar on Monday afternoon. Following this, the protesters held a sit-in on the road. They demanded that Vineet Goyal should either come and talk to them or resign from his post. The police responded to this suggesting that a delegation of junior doctors may come and meet the Kolkata Police Commissioner to present their demands. Junking this proposal, junior doctors held a sit-in since afternoon.
Tollywood stars Chaiti Ghoshal, Sudipta Chakraborty, and Debolina Dutta showed their support to the protesting doctors. They said that the Police Commissioner could have met the doctors if he wanted to.
Meanwhile, junior doctors were elated to hear the news of the arrest of former RG Kar Principal Sandeep Ghosh. However, they did not step back from their demand of Vineet Goyal’s resignation. They made it clear that though Ghosh’s arrest is a moral victory for them, they will not back down from their demand. The doctors said that they will not create any disturbance.
Key roads like BB Ganguly Street have been blocked throughout Monday owing to the night-long protest of junior doctors on Monday. It needs to be seen what approach the police takes if the protest continues till Tuesday morning.
