New Delhi: India’s latest Davis Cup sensation Dhakshineswar Suresh believes his impressive start in national colours is only the first step of a much longer journey as he prepares to enter full time competition on the ATP Tour. The 25 year old, who is completing communication studies at Wake Forest University in the United States, will finish his degree in May before turning his complete focus to professional tennis.
Since making his debut for India in September 2025, Dhakshineswar has enjoyed a dream run, winning all four of his matches across two ties. His finest performance came last weekend in Bengaluru, where he secured three victories against the Netherlands and played a decisive role in India’s 3 to 2 triumph that sealed a place in the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers against Korea.
Describing the experience as special, the Chennai born player said representing the country had brought out a new dimension in his game. He explained that playing for India created a different sense of responsibility and motivation, pushing him to produce tennis he had never played before. He also credited the team environment and medical staff for helping him recover from two demanding days of singles and doubles action.
Captain Rohit Rajpal praised the youngster’s temperament, pointing out that very few players manage to remain unbeaten in their first four Davis Cup rubbers against strong opposition. According to the captain, Dhakshineswar’s big serve and aggressive forehand repeatedly delivered at crucial moments and he hoped the player would continue to enjoy his tennis in the same manner.
Rajpal also highlighted the courage of Sumit Nagal, who competed despite carrying a serious hip injury. He said Nagal showed the fighting spirit expected from an India number one and provided leadership even while not fully fit.
Looking ahead, Dhakshineswar plans to return to the United States to complete his studies before finalising his tournament schedule in May. The Indian team management will soon begin preparations for the Korea tie, with discussions on venue and surface expected in the coming weeks.
