PANAJI: Following the exit of former Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude from the position of Chairman of the Kala Academy, the Kala Rakhonn Mand has called for the appointment of a non-political individual with both artistic merit and administrative expertise to head the cultural institution.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Kala Academy, Sandesh Prabhudesai of the Kala Rakhonn Mand noted that Gaude’s tenure had officially ended in April 2025. “After April, he was no longer the Chairman. The institution faced several setbacks during his term, and we now hope for a fresh and constructive direction,” Prabhudesai said.
The group, supported by members of the Kala Academy Experts Committee, insisted that the new Chairman should be an experienced artist who also understands institutional management. “We are looking for someone who values both the cultural significance and the administrative functioning of the Academy,” Prabhudesai stated.
They also demanded that the post of Vice Chairman be kept out of political hands to ensure the institution’s autonomy and cultural integrity.
“The Executive Body and General Council should be composed of individuals from the arts. Independent professionals, free from political influence, are better suited to protect and promote our cultural heritage,” he added.
The group extended its appeal to other state-run cultural institutions, urging that similar non-political appointments be made to leadership positions at Kala Mandirs and Ravindra Bhavans across Goa.
