PANAJI: Former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s recent remarks targeting the Indian National Congress have drawn sharp criticism from senior party leader Girish Chodankar, who termed the statements as “hypocritical” and reflective of “political opportunism and betrayal.”
Chodankar, in a strongly worded press note, slammed Kamat for his selective outrage over the Emergency—an event that occurred decades before Kamat’s rise within the Congress. “If Kamat truly believes the Emergency was a betrayal of democracy, why did he accept the position of Chief Minister under Congress rule?” Chodankar questioned.
He said Kamat served not just as Chief Minister for five years but also held ministerial posts and led the Congress Legislative Party. “His past silence and current moral grandstanding expose a deep lack of integrity and a clear attempt to manipulate history for personal political gain,” he added.
Chodankar further pointed out that Kamat continues to serve as an MLA elected on the Congress symbol, reaping the benefits of the very party he now criticises. “This is nothing short of political fraud,” he said.
Calling Kamat’s actions a betrayal of public trust, Chodankar threw a direct challenge: “If he has even a shred of honesty left, he should resign and contest again on a BJP ticket. Let the people of Margao decide if they support a leader who keeps shifting loyalties or the values they originally voted for.”
