SANCOALE: BJP Karnataka cell member and prominent Kannadiga leader Rajesh Shetty filed his nomination papers on Tuesday as an independent candidate from the Sancoale constituency for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections, setting the stage for an intense electoral contest.
Shetty, known for his active involvement with the Kannadiga community in Mormugao taluka, arrived at the Mormugao Block office with supporters before submitting his papers to the returning officer. Speaking after the filing, Shetty said that his decision to contest independently was driven by strong appeals from various sections of society.
“There was a lot of pressure from the Kannadiga samaj, local organisations, and several residents from different sections of the constituency. They felt I should step forward and take responsibility, and their confidence in me pushed me to contest as an independent,” Shetty said, adding that the nomination was not a political move but a response to the community’s expectations.
He emphasised that development would remain his primary agenda if elected. “Sancoale has immense potential, but several areas have been waiting for basic improvements. I want to take up development works that benefit everyone — not just one group or community. Roads, water supply, drainage, public spaces, and youth-related initiatives will all be prioritised,” he said.
Supporters at the venue said Shetty’s decision to contest had energised voters who were seeking a candidate with both administrative experience and grassroots connections. With nominations gaining momentum, the Sancoale constituency is expected to become a closely watched battleground in the ZP polls.
