New Delhi: In a shocking revelation, Karnataka Cooperative Minister KN Rajanna exposed a deep-seated issue plaguing the state’s political landscape: the widespread use of “honey traps” to manipulate and blackmail politicians. This scandal has ensnared at least 48 politicians across party lines, sparking a heated debate in the Karnataka Assembly and calls for a high-level investigation. The controversy highlights a broader concern about the use of blackmail tactics in politics to undermine opponents, raising questions about the ethical conduct of political leaders.
The allegations led to a ruckus in the Assembly, with the BJP demanding a judicial probe and the government assuring a thorough investigation once a formal complaint is filed. This development has brought to light a long-standing issue, with Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi confirming that such tactics have been used for nearly two decades, targeting politicians from all major parties.
Minister KN Rajanna claimed that 48 politicians have fallen victim to honey traps, with obscene videos allegedly circulated. This network, described as a “factory of CDs and pen drives,” is not limited to Karnataka but has national implications, with some union ministers also reportedly targeted. The issue transcends party lines, affecting leaders from the Congress, BJP, and JD(S).
Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi revealed that a cabinet colleague faced two unsuccessful honey trap attempts. Jarkiholi emphasized that such tactics have no place in politics and should be stopped. He also highlighted that these incidents are not new, having occurred in previous governments as well.
Home Minister G Parameshwara announced that a high-level probe would be conducted once a formal complaint is filed. However, the BJP has pushed for a judicial probe, with Leader of Opposition R Ashoka calling for an investigation by a sitting judge. This demand reflects the opposition’s skepticism about the government’s willingness to address the issue impartially.
The controversy has raised concerns about the ethical conduct of politics in Karnataka. The allegations have been linked to broader political tactics, with some suggesting it is part of a larger conspiracy against legislators. The issue underscores the need for a non-partisan approach to address the use of blackmail in politics, ensuring that political rivalries do not descend into unethical practices.
