PANAJI: The opening round of the Goa Premier Division League continued to witness impressive performances on the second day, with Geno Sports Club, Panjim Gymkhana and Salgaocar Cricket Club taking strong positions against their respective opponents.
At the Bandodkar Ground, Geno Sports Club secured a first innings lead of 40 runs after bowling out Chowgule Sports Club for 197 in reply to their 237. Madhur Yadav top scored for Chowgule with 56, while Sanath Nevagi added 27 and Kaustubh Pingulkar contributed 26. Geno leg spinner Manish Kakode delivered an outstanding spell, claiming 5 wickets for 48 runs, while Samarth Rane supported with figures of 3 for 57. Geno then strengthened their advantage in the second innings, reaching 124 for 3 and extending their overall lead to 164 runs. Manthan Khutkar led the scoring with 74, while Kaushal Hattangadi remained unbeaten on 38.
At the NAPEX Ground, Panjim Gymkhana gained a 25 run first innings lead over Margao Cricket Club. After posting 259 in their first innings, Panjim Gymkhana dismissed Margao Cricket Club for 234. Off spinner Deep Kasvankar produced the key bowling performance, taking 6 wickets for 74 runs. Deepraj Gaonkar was the top scorer for Margao with 37, while other batters contributed smaller totals. By stumps on the second day, Panjim Gymkhana were 82 for 2 in their second innings, stretching their lead to 107 runs. Ishan Gadekar remained unbeaten on 41, while captain Suyash Prabhudessai added 26.
Meanwhile at the Goa Cricket Association Ground, Salgaocar Cricket Club piled up a massive first innings total of 513 against Dempo Cricket Club. Ayush Verlekar anchored the innings with a superb unbeaten 176. Rahul Mehta was the pick of the bowlers for Dempo with figures of 5 for 116. In reply, Dempo struggled at 129 for 6 and still trail by 384 runs. Captain Snehal Kauthankar remained unbeaten on 54, while Aaditya Kota scored 33. Salgaocar skipper Yash Kasvankar led the bowling attack with figures of 4 for 31, while Amulya Pandrekar claimed two wickets.
The matches will now head into the third and final day as teams aim to convert their strong positions into victories.
