New Delhi: In a compelling assertion during the Rajya Sabha’s discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress and other opposition parties of sidelining Muslims for decades. Emphasizing the need for secularism in statutory bodies, Rijiju proposed that the inclusion of non-Muslims on the Waqf Board would enhance its decision-making capabilities.
At the heart of Rijiju’s argument was the belief that Muslim welfare has been neglected under previous governments. He pointed out that the Congress, during its rule, failed to uplift Muslims from poverty. In contrast, Rijiju claims that the current government, under the motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,’ is working towards the equal development of all communities.
Rijiju’s participation in the discussion highlighted several key points. He emphasized that the Waqf Board, as a statutory body, should embody secular principles by including a limited number of non-Muslims. This, according to him, would not only provide value addition but also ensure that the board benefits from diverse perspectives. The Bill, Rijiju noted, has incorporated suggestions from both the Joint Parliamentary Committee and stakeholders, aiming to create a broadly acceptable framework.
However, Rijiju also alleged that opposition parties have been frightening the Muslim community with misinformation about the Waqf Bill, portraying it as a strategy to keep Muslims out of the mainstream. He emphasized that the majority’s will should prevail in a democracy, underscoring the importance of majoritarian consensus in legislative processes.
In urging members to support the Bill, Rijiju asserted that it would be a historic step forward, benefiting millions of Muslims. Despite strong opposition from various parties, Rijiju maintained that the central government’s approach is inclusive and aimed at mainstreaming Muslim welfare.
