VERNA: In a significant step towards providing safer and more economical long-distance car travel, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced the launch of a new Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) car transport service between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa.
Known for pioneering Ro-Ro services in India since 1999 for freight trucks, KRCL is now extending this innovative model to private car owners for the first time.
The new service will commence on August 23, 2025, from Kolad and on August 24, 2025, from Verna. It will operate on alternate days in each direction until September 11, 2025. Departures are scheduled at 5:00 p.m., with the trains arriving at 5:00 a.m. the following day. Passengers must report at the departure station by 2:00 p.m. for loading procedures.
The specially designed rake can accommodate 40 cars per trip, with two vehicles loaded onto each of the 20 wagons. The freight charge is ₹7,875 per car (inclusive of GST), with an initial registration fee of ₹4,000 payable at the time of booking. The remaining amount must be paid on the day of travel.
To further enhance convenience, up to three individuals per car may travel in an attached coach by paying an additional fare — ₹935 per passenger for 3AC or ₹190 per passenger for second seating. This ensures that both the vehicle and its occupants can travel together comfortably.
Bookings are open from July 21 to August 13, 2025, and can be made at the Office of the Chief Commercial Manager, KRCL, located at Belapur Bhavan in Navi Mumbai, or at Verna Railway Station in Goa. Flexible payment options, including UPI and cash, are available. In case of insufficient bookings (fewer than 16 cars), the trip will be cancelled and registration fees will be fully refunded.
