PANAJI: Veteran Konkani singer, composer and cultural activist Eric Ozario breathed his last in Mangalore on Friday afternoon. He was 75.
Born on May 18, 1949, in Jeppu, Mangalore, Ozario became a towering figure in the promotion and preservation of Konkani art, literature and music. With his remarkable voice and compositions, he played a vital role in shaping the cultural identity of the Konkani-speaking community.
He was the visionary founder of Mandd Sobhann, a premier cultural organisation dedicated to nurturing and celebrating Konkani heritage. Under his stewardship, the organisation spearheaded numerous initiatives, festivals and performances that brought international attention to Konkani music and traditions.
Ozario is also remembered for his tireless efforts in having Konkani introduced as an optional subject in Karnataka schools — a landmark step that gave younger generations the opportunity to formally study and engage with the language.
While he was admired as an organiser and activist, Ozario’s legacy as a singer and composer resonated deeply with audiences. His music, imbued with cultural pride, inspired generations of musicians and writers to embrace Konkani art forms.
