Panaji: The Konkani documentary Bhaangar Kalakusar Karigiri, directed by Prachi Shirodkar, has won the Best Student Documentary Award at the Goa International Film Competition (GIFC) 2025.
The award recognises emerging talent in art and cinema, a key objective of GIFC, which was established to provide a platform for young artists and filmmakers to showcase contemporary storytelling and creative expression.
Bhaangar Kalakusar Karigiri was produced as a college project under the guidance of Agnelo Raymond D’Souza at Don Bosco College, Panaji. Prachi Shirodkar took on multiple roles in the project, serving as director, narrator and cinematographer.
The documentary focuses on the traditional craft of gold artisans in Goa, documenting the skill, labour and lived experiences of craftsmen working in a heritage driven profession. Artisans featured in the film include Pranay Shirodkar, Rashila Shirodkar and Virendra Rivankar, who offer insights into the challenges and continuity of the gold industry in the state.
Prachi Shirodkar is an artist and a graduate in Mass Communication, and also holds a diploma in Architecture. She currently works as an art director and filmmaker, bringing a strong visual and design sensibility to her work.
The film has been edited by Mario Pimenta. To enhance its international accessibility, the documentary has been subtitled in several languages, including Turkish, Japanese and Spanish.
The recognition at GIFC 2025 marks an important milestone for the young filmmaker and underscores the role of documentary cinema in preserving and promoting indigenous art forms and cultural heritage.
