VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar was elected unopposed as the President of the Murgaon Nagrik Shigmotsav Samiti (MNSS) for the third consecutive year at a meeting held on Tuesday evening. The meeting witnessed the presence of MNSS members and office-bearers, who unanimously supported Salkar’s candidature, with no contest for the post.
Salkar’s re-election comes on the back of the large-scale expansion of the Vasco Shigmotsav over the last two years, during which the festival has seen a marked rise in footfall and programme quality.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Salkar thanked the members for placing their trust in him once again. “For the last two years, we have worked with full commitment to upgrade the Vasco Shigmotsav. We focused on organising quality programmes and bringing well-known artistes and star performers so that people get to see something new and entertaining every year,” he said.
He stated that the organising committee has consistently tried to raise the standard of events. “Different types of high-quality programmes were organised, and we will continue the same approach this year as well. Our effort has always been to make the Vasco Shigmotsav bigger, better and more attractive for the public,” Salkar added.
The Vasco MLA emphasised that the festival is meant for everyone. “Shigmotsav is not limited to MNSS members. It is a festival for the people of the entire taluka. We have seen that more than 6,000 people attend the Vasco Shigmotsav programmes, and this year we are expecting an even larger crowd. We request people to come in large numbers and encourage the artistes who travel from far and wide to perform in Vasco,” he said.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said MNSS meetings usually involve intense discussions, with members offering suggestions and raising objections. “Despite the usual chaos during MNSS meetings, there was complete agreement in electing Krishna Salkar unopposed as president for the third consecutive year. No one contested against him this time,” Borker said.
Borker added that members have witnessed the work done under Salkar’s leadership. “People have seen his contribution over the last two years and how the Vasco Shigmotsav has grown manifold with large-scale programmes and star performances. That is the reason for the unanimous decision,” he said.
He also pointed out that the meeting was held at the newly inaugurated hall on the top floor of the Vasco fish market, which was opened only a few days ago. “Holding the meeting in this new hall itself stands as another achievement during Salkar’s tenure as the MLA of Vasco,” Borker added.
