Panaji: Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) has suspended one of its drivers, Rajesh Pagi, following public outrage over an incident in which school students were allegedly made to push a broken-down KTC bus along the Nuvem–Manora route. The suspension is in effect pending the results of an internal inquiry.
The incident sparked widespread criticism after a video showing students pushing the stalled bus on a busy road surfaced online and quickly went viral. The footage raised serious concerns about passenger safety and the decision-making of the driver involved.
Depot in-charge of KTC Margao, Sanket Manjrekar, confirmed the disciplinary action, stating that a memorandum had been served to the driver. “He has been placed under suspension until the inquiry is concluded. Further action will be based on the findings of the investigation,” Manjrekar said.
Initial reports suggest the bus encountered mechanical issues during a routine trip. Instead of waiting for official roadside assistance or arranging an alternate vehicle, the driver allegedly asked the students on board to help push the bus, either to restart it or move it off the main road.
The move has drawn sharp reactions from parents, commuters, and civil society groups who deemed the action unsafe and irresponsible. “Children should never be placed in such risky situations,” said a concerned parent. “This reflects poorly on the transport system’s preparedness and safety standards.”
While residents have welcomed the swift suspension of the driver, many are calling for stricter enforcement of safety protocols in case of vehicle breakdowns. A commuter rights advocate from Margao emphasised that such incidents must be treated with zero tolerance to prevent future lapses.
KTC has assured the public that it places passenger safety above all else and that firm disciplinary measures will be taken if any violation of safety procedures is confirmed through the ongoing inquiry.
