CORTALIM: Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Monday morning launched stabilization works on the hillock near Cortalim Circle, which was affected by a landslide. The project, estimated at ₹1.39 crore, was inaugurated in the presence of Cortalim Sarpanch Ujwala Naik and other panchayat members.
Speaking to the media, Vas recalled the day the landslide struck, stating that he was in the Assembly when the incident occurred. “I rushed to the site and saw stones falling and bikes trapped in the mud. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. We immediately began temporary work on the hillock,” he said.
However, Vas highlighted that the project faced criticism and required multiple approvals, causing delays. “Thanks to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, the works were prioritized and sanctioned on a war footing,” he added.
The stabilization project includes stepping, reinforcement of the hillock, and a proper drainage system to prevent water accumulation and future landslides. As a safety measure, the service road near the hillock will remain closed for 45 days while the work is in progress.
“We urge people to bear with this temporary inconvenience for long-term safety and benefits,” Vas stated. The contractor has assured the completion of the work within the stipulated timeframe.
