New Delhi: The proposed India European Union free trade agreement has been described as the largest FTA in the world, carrying significance far beyond trade. European Council President Antonio Costa said the agreement would send a strong message of stability and cooperation at a time when global economic and political uncertainty is rising.
The long awaited pact is expected to be signed at the upcoming EU India summit in New Delhi, hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Costa said the agreement would be the most comprehensive trade deal ever concluded by either India or the European Union and would serve as a cornerstone of their expanding strategic partnership.
According to Costa, the agreement reflects a shared belief in open and rules based trade. He said both sides see free trade as a tool for growth and stability rather than turning to protectionism or tariff driven economic policies. By committing to predictable trade frameworks, two of the world’s largest democracies are reinforcing confidence in the global economic order.
He noted that the agreement would provide long term certainty in India EU relations at a time when global supply chains and strategic alliances are undergoing major realignments. The deal is also expected to improve access for Indian companies to European markets while strengthening cooperation in defence and security.
Costa highlighted the close link between economic engagement and security cooperation, stating that enhanced trade ties would support joint efforts to build defence capabilities. Maritime security was identified as a key area of collaboration, given the shared reliance of India and Europe on safe and uninterrupted sea routes for trade and energy supplies.
Climate cooperation and the energy transition will also form an important pillar of the partnership. Costa acknowledged India’s commitment to global climate goals and said both sides aim to work together on renewable energy and sustainable growth, including alignment on climate related trade measures.
On broader global issues, Costa reiterated the European Union’s firm support for sovereignty and territorial integrity, including backing Denmark and Greenland amid recent tensions. He also reaffirmed continued European support for Ukraine, calling for genuine efforts toward peace while stressing the human cost of ongoing conflict.
Reflecting on his participation in India’s Republic Day celebrations, Costa praised India’s democratic values and diversity, describing the country as a powerful example of how democracy can preserve unity amid pluralism.
